The Boy & the Starfish

A man was walking along a deserted beach at sunset. As he walked he could see a young boy in the distance. As he drew nearer he noticed that the boy kept bending down, picking something up and throwing it into the water. Time and again, he kept hurling things into the ocean.

As the man approached even closer, he was able to see that the boy was picking up starfish that had been washed up on the beach. and, one at a time, he was throwing them back into the water.

The man asked the boy what he was doing; the boy replied,"I am throwing these washed up starfish back into the ocean, or else they will die through lack of oxygen. "But", said the man, "You can't possibly save them all; there are thousands on this beach, and this must be happening on hundreds of beaches along the coast. You can't possibly make a difference."

The boy smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as he threw it back into the sea, he replied, "I made a huge difference to that one!"

  1. never ever underestimate the power of simple things.. simple actions.. simple kind words..

simple things make a huge difference..

if every one said what the difference i could possibly make from doing this and that, and underestimated his/her ability in making a difference no one would reach the top.

(journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step) :)

  2. Yes I do agree with you bumble_bee:). The smallest actions can have a tremendous effect on great events:). The smallest actions can lead us to the greatest events. Many successful and famous people begun their journey from small actions.

This story reminds me of the short story "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradury". In this story a small action from the past(killing a butterfly) changed the life forms of the present.

  3. Yes exactly, I couldn't have worded it better myself :) It's like throwing a rock into the sea, God knows how long the ripple effect (waves) will last!

    Thank you both :D

  5. An heartless man killed the butterfly:(. Men are so harsh bumble_bee. They always underestimate the existance of such delicate butterflies:( so sad lool

In the story an hunter killed the butterfly. But it happened by coincidence. He didn't intend to kill her. This shows that not always men are harsh looooool.

  8. Despite being a small young boy, he was conscious that one small starfish can make a huge difference! Smart boy. He thought about something that the adult didn't think about.

  10. I am sorry I was kidding:). I do believe that harshness is not a feature of specific gender. Not all men are harsh, and not all women are kind:). We can't generalized
